Indianapolis – About 16,000 PETA supporters asked the local science, technology, engineering and mathematics company Project Lead The Way (PLTW) to stop promoting animal dissection in their Gateway and Biomedical Science programs, and PETA today sent a letter to the PLTW CEO signed by more than 500 doctors who also ask the company to take advantage of advanced technology and completely eliminate dissection. Doctors and PETA note that PLTW already offers non-animal tools and that no medical school in the country more uses animal dissection to train future doctors…
“Experienced doctors who have joined PETA in this fight know that students deserve modern tools that do not harm animals,” says Martha Holmberg, senior director of PETA’s youth programs. “If future doctors can train without dissecting animals, schoolchildren definitely don’t need to do it.”
PLTW promotes dissection using piglets cut from their mothers’ bodies in the slaughterhouse, as well as sheep hearts and heads, cow’s eyes and pig kidneys. Research shows that while autopsies have been shown to promote callousness towards animals and distract students from careers in science and medicine, students who use modern non-animal autopsy techniques already offered by the company do better at assessing knowledge.
