Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina – PETA is calling for maltreatment charges against those responsible for the death of a female pit bull named Star, who was found dead by a PETA field worker from heatstroke Friday at the Roanoke Rapids residence. Photos of Star before and after her death are available here. (Warning: graphics)

In Halifax County, unattended tying is illegal and punishable by a fine, but even though PETA notified the Halifax County Animal Authority of tying violations at that address, Star remained illegally tethered in the open air, which ultimately killed her. Halifax County Animal Control Service was called in and responded to the scene of Star’s death on Friday, but despite admitting that Star died as a result of being tethered and entangled in full sun without a drop of water or shade, no enforcement action was taken. or steps to initiate a criminal case.

“Tying a dog up and leaving it to suffer an excruciating death from heatstroke is a crime, but what good is the law if law enforcement can’t enforce it?” – says the senior vice president of PETA Daphne Nakhminovich. “PETA is urging the community to not only report atrocities, but also hold animal control officials accountable for complying with animal welfare laws so that no other dog is hurt like Star.”

PETA is rushing to circulate a new public service TV ad across the state urging people to call authorities if they see dogs on chains and / or without water or shade. In cases where authorities do not respond, people should call 757-622-PETA.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
