Atlanta – Armed with federal documents showing that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) staff starved animals, steamed and strangled animals, and killed them in other horrendous ways, PETA is calling on the International Laboratory Care Organization’s Evaluation and Accreditation Association animals (AAALAC International) revoke the accreditation of CDC laboratories.

Among the many federal rule violations PETA found, the female monkey suffered from a vaginal ring that formed a mass in her body after it was left there for three years, rather than the planned 14 days. One mouse was locked in a food bin and died of dehydration, another mouse was steamed to death in a high-temperature autoclave, and 42 mice (four of which died) were left without oxygen. Fifty-five chickens died – five of them, probably from starvation – after employees placed the eggs and embryos in incubators instead of refrigerators. Four mice were left without food, and one died of hunger. Guinea pigs in four cages had no access to water for 48 hours and one had to be euthanized. One hundred and seventy-seven mice were born “unexpectedly” due to the fact that the staff could not determine the sex of the animals housed together, and 68 of them were euthanized.

In other cases, CDC officials ignored approved protocols and subjected goats to plasma sampling “every 48 hours” instead of every 30 days, infected rabbits with three bags of ticks instead of two, resulting in the death of one rabbit, and forced the monkeys to wear an unapproved jacket to “protect the implantation site. researchers “.

“The animals in the CDC labs suffer and die in agony – in experiments that most Americans oppose, according to a Pew Research Center poll – because the staff are clearly sloppy and incompetent,” said PETA vice president Dr. Alka Chandna. “The CDC is responsible for protecting Americans during the COVID-19 crisis, the worst pandemic in recent history, but it cannot even properly manage its own laboratories.”

AAALAC International, an independent accrediting body, put CDC on probation in 2005 after serious deficiencies were documented at all levels, from basic household management to poor farming practices and poor or nonexistent veterinary care.

Research shows that a staggering 90% of basic research, most of it involving animals and the types of work done at the CDC, does not lead to cures for humans.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
