You can resist arrogance everywhere… Yes, even in class! Just ask Courtney Owens, a PETA Top TeachKind instructor who has championed crayfish as a passionate vegan advocate at her school.
When the school marked the end of the school year with “boiling crayfish,” an event where live crayfish are forced into hot water, a vegan teacher wrote a passionate letter to staff to draw attention to the suffering of crustaceans. when they are brutally killed for food.
Like all animals, crayfish don’t want to be eaten.
Like humans, cancers feel pain. They limp when injured, release hormones similar to adrenaline when injured, and fight for their lives not to be roasted alive. These crayfish desperately clung to the edge of a boiling pot of water in order to avoid the same fate as their relatives:
As Owens pointed out in her email to 70 of her school staff members, we would do the same if we were in this position… “Humans are not the only living beings who fight to their last breath,” she wrote. “[A]All animals do.
While many animals go into shock to cope with unbearable pain, zoologists have found that lobsters and other crustaceans do not have this ability. In other words, they can suffer completely without relief.… Even if they didn’t, they still don’t want to die…
Owens also noted in her letter that even if there were no studies on whether they feel pain or not, we still need to be empathetic – “especially since we are not them.”
Take the opportunity to guide and inform others as Owens did
As Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” PETA applauds Owens for this. After she spoke to the school staff on behalf of the affected animals, several of them addressed her, including the deputy principal, with kind words:and a new commitment to helping animals.
