Is there vegan milk? Students across the country stand, sit, and demand that Starbucks stop charging for vegan milk. These protesters are sending an important message: there are no such things as cash cows – only mothers with milk stolen by humans.

Student activists – part of the Student Movement Against Racism (SOS), a PETA-backed youth movement against human supremacy – sit to take positions in cities across the country, including Boulder, Colorado; Brentwood, Cupertino and Los Angeles, California; Elmira, New York; Orlando, Florida; and Pittsburgh. 3 students stand indoors with their posters protesting against StarbucksOrlando, Florida, Starbucks sit-in

These peaceful sit-ins are helping to educate the public and raise awareness of the horrors of the dairy industry.

Some people don’t know that the dairy industry exploits female cows and then kills them when they are no longer profitable. Cows kept in captivity in this brutal system are forcibly inseminated, their calves are stolen during the day after birth and are often milked to the point of injury. Then they are killed and put on someone’s plate. Those looking to help oppressed cows by requesting vegan milk from Starbucks should not be subject to an additional fee.

Not only is dairy farming unfair to cows, dairy-free fees also ignore the dietary needs of BIPOC, which is largely lactose intolerant. When big companies like Starbucks make dairy the default, they are promoting the exception. And regardless of your ethnicity, consuming dairy products can increase your risk of heart disease, cancer, and strokes.

Since the consumption of dairy products is so common in our society, many people don’t think twice. Informative student demonstrations help to convey to the public that drinking a different type of breast milk is unnatural and unnecessary.

Inspired by these progressive student activists? You can have a sit-in at Starbucks! It can help change the hearts of Starbucks executives by educating customers that dairy is unhealthy, unsustainable and unethical.
