Providence Village, TX – In recognition of the community’s thoughtful step of installing mesh fences around storm drains to prevent ducklings from falling through or drowning, PETA will hand over to City Manager Brian D. Roberson Compassionate City Reward at the council meeting on Tuesday.

“With the foresight and care of Providence Village, vulnerable ducklings will be saved from terrible deaths from drowning in storm drains,” said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA recognizes this compassionate community and encourages other cities to make similar efforts to keep animals out of harm’s way.”
Every year PETA receives reports of ducklings falling into storm sewers. Although some are saved – and they are reunited with their worried mothers – many lose their lives. Ducklings can drown quickly as they don’t yet produce oil to coat their feathers for protection, which is why PETA recommends safety measures such as barriers or ramps around gutters and sewer grates. On their website, the group offers additional tips for living with animals.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority.
