Goats are intelligent, sensitive animals that can recognize their friends, form complex social structures and family bonds, and compete with dogs in their ability to read human emotions. Like rabbits, goats will “shake” when they are happy and excited. But those exploited by the mohair industry are forced to endure immense brutality during their short lives.
Much of the world’s mohair comes from South Africa, where PETA Asia conducted the first-ever eyewitness investigation that uncovered systematic abuse of goats in mohair production. They endured a brutal and bloody haircut during which workers dragged them by the feet, threw them on the floor and deliberately maimed them. The worker slit the throats of unwanted goats while they were conscious and could feel pain and terror.
No sweater, scarf, blanket, or any other mohair item is worth the suffering of a goat.
