Actor this morning Alan Cumming sent a letter on behalf of PETA to MP Alok Sharma, President 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) urging him to ensure that only vegan food is served at the event. The proud Scotsman notes that the meat and dairy industry is a major contributor to the climate crisis that the Glasgow event seeks to tackle.
“With livestock contributing to many of the major environmental challenges facing the planet, I hope you agree that serving meat in an effort to combat climate change is like serving beer at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
If the goal of COP26 is to protect the planet and encourage compassionate and responsible behavior, animal foods have no place on the menu. ”
– Alan Cumming
Vegan food is better for the environment
Fishing, meat, dairy and egg industries are not only cruel to animals, but also cause catastrophic damage to the environment. For decades, the United Nations (UN) has identified livestock as the leading cause of deforestation, pollution, ocean dead zones, habitat loss, species extinction and the spread of zoonotic diseases.
According to the UN, livestock is responsible for between 14% and 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which, according to some estimates, exceeds everything types of transport are combined.
Vegan foods have a much lower carbon footprint than their animal equivalents, even when comparing imported vegetable proteins to grass-raised locally grown meat. And switching to a vegan diet could cut food-related carbon emissions by 73%.
Simply put, going vegan is one of the best ways to reduce your environmental impact.
COP26 has to offer an all-vegan menu – help make that possible
PETA urges COP26 to take action to protect the climate and wholly vegan menu. Join our campaign!
