Ann Arbor, Michigan. – To celebrate the beginning of autumn, PETA searched the country for the best vegan chili dishes, and The Lunch Room Bakery & Cafe and its sister establishment, Detroit Street Filling Station, took a spot on their Hearty Chili list, loaded with sweet potatoes, butternut squash, black beans and beans, tomatoes and seasoned with savory spices.
“Chilli bowls are the perfect comfort food, and the food evokes the comforting thought that no animal was harmed in the making,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA recognizes the Detroit Street dining room and gas station for helping people eat their favorite foods, cruelty-free and cholesterol-free.”
PETA notes that the meat industry brands cows, castrates them, and rips their horns out of their skulls, often without pain relievers. After that, workers pack the animals into filthy feedlots and then into vehicles for a gruesome ride to the slaughterhouse. Vegan meat sales are up 148% in 2020 over the previous year, and 47% of Americans want to include more vegan foods in their diets in 2021.
Other winners include Plant Bae of Montgomery, Alabama; Arles & Boggs Vegan Diner in Wallingford, Connecticut; Leaf & Bean House in Jacksonville, Florida; The Grit in Athens, Georgia; and Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington DC. Each establishment will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers many vegan chili recipes on its website.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
