Milwaukee – In a win-win situation for patients and pigs, obstetricians and gynecologists (obstetricians-gynecologists) at Aurora Sinai Medical Center will no longer perform surgical procedures on live animals after discussion with PETA.
In response to a March survey by PETA and a Utah physician regarding the use of animals in obstetrics and gynecology residency programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Postgraduate Medical Education in the United States and Canada, Aurora Sinai Medical Center confirmed that it uses three live pigs annually. to train 13 residents in a range of reproductive surgery.
After about four months of negotiations with PETA, the hospital announced its transition to human simulation-based obstetrician-gynecology residency training, writing to PETA: “We will no longer use live animals. The decision came into force. “
“The obstetricians and gynecologists at Aurora Sinai Medical Center deserve the very best in medical education, which means that simulation models are relevant to humans,” says PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “PETA is committed to helping medical centers across the country move to modern animal-free options that will save animal lives and allow trainees to practice invasive procedures until they are confident and proficient.”
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to experiment,” and which opposes arrogance, a worldview based on human superiority, notes that research shows that doctors who learn life-saving surgical skills in human simulators, more experienced than those using animals. In 2016, PETA donated an advanced virtual reality surgical system to the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago to replace the use of live pigs in obstetrics and gynecology residency.
