Medical Residents of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB / GYN) in Aurora Sinai Medical Center Milwaukee will no longer practice surgical procedures on live animals after approximately four months of negotiations between the hospital and PETA.
A win-win situation for pigs and the patients.
In response to a March 2021 survey by PETA and a Utah physician regarding the use of animals in obstetrics and gynecology residency programs accredited by the Council for Postgraduate Medical Education Accreditation in the United States and Canada, Aurora Sinai Medical Center confirmed that it used three live pigs. annually to train 13 residents in a range of female reproductive surgery.
After discussing and agreeing on the superiority of high-tech human uterine modeling modules, the hospital made a sympathetic decision to purchase a number of them to train intern physicians, which will save many pigs from invasive surgeries in the coming years.
“We will no longer use live animals. The decision came into force. “
– Dr. Callie Cox Bauer, Associate Program Director, Aurora Health Care OB / GYN Residency Program
PETA’s push to replace the use of animals in medical education
PETA has contacted more than 300 obstetrician / gynecologist residency programs in the United States and Canada to help them transition to the next level. no animals teaching methods.
Research shows that doctors who learn vital surgical skills in human simulators are more experienced than those who use animals. In 2016, PETA donated an advanced virtual reality surgical system to the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago to replace the use of live pigs in this school’s obstetrics and gynecology residency.
“Residents of obstetrics and gynecology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center deserve the best medical education, which means that simulation models will be relevant to humans. PETA is committed to helping healthcare centers across the country move to modern animal-free options that will save animal lives and allow trainees to practice invasive procedures until they are confident and proficient. ”
