Brookhaven, New York – With a bull named Barney still at large in Suffolk County, PETA and the Long Island Orchestrating for Nature (LION) are seeking to place a billboard that reads “Help Others Escape the Slaughterhouse: Become a Vegan”. LEO is on the ground in the area trying to get Barney to a hideout where he can live the rest of his days in peace.
“This bull is fighting hard for its freedom, just like any of us would if someone chased us with a knife,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “The PETA billboard will remind each of us that we can honor his courage and win freedom for all animals, from bulls to birds, by keeping them away from our plates.”
Everyone who goes vegan saves about 200 animals a year from daily suffering and horrific death. Cows in the meat industry are often kept in cramped and muddy feedlots with no weather protection. In the slaughterhouse, workers shoot them in the head with a pistol with captive bolts, hang them by one leg, and slit their throats – often while they are still conscious.
