New Orleans residents – Armed with government documents and photographs showing that dozens of caged animals were unnecessarily stressed and brought in trucks from California to film the film adaptation. Where the crayfish singPETA sent a letter this morning to the book’s author, conservationist Delia Owens, urging her to use her influence to help prevent further exploitation of wildlife.
“Where the crayfish sing has inspired millions of readers to value and respect nature, but photographs of a skunk and other animals housed in film cages paint a very different picture, ”says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “PETA is confident that a well-known conservationist like Delia Owens will not stand idle and allow filmmakers to continue to exploit wildlife to tell her story.”
PETA notes that infamous Hollywood animal supplier Birds & Animals Unlimited (BAU) appears to have provided some of the animals for the film. A 10-month PETA investigation found the animals were denied adequate veterinary care for illness and injury, forced to live in filthy enclosures, and denied food to keep them hungry while learning tricks. Following PETA’s exposure, the USDA cited BAU as a violation of federal animal welfare laws.
