Toronto – After PETA presented a shareholder proposal urging Canada Goose to stop using coyote fur trapped in steel traps and the down of farmed birds in its parks, the company’s lawyers threatened to sue PETA if it does not withdraw the proposal.the third year in a row that a company has come up with such a threat… Rather than engaging in lengthy and costly litigation to defend against unfounded litigation, PETA decided today to withdraw its offer and attack the company’s methods through direct interaction with its potential customers.
“Canada Goose has hired lawyers in the US and Canada to stop PETA’s proposal from being published to its shareholders because it would have had to discuss the pitiful deaths of countless geese and coyotes at a shareholders meeting,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “Rather than pouring our donor money down the litigation drain, PETA will now spend the same amount on protests and advertising that empowers the public to reject Canada Goose’s violent fur and feather coats.”
Standard industry practice in the fur and down industry allows hunters to use painful snares and steel traps that strike the legs of coyotes, and geese are sent to slaughterhouses, where they are stunned, their throats cut and their bodies slashed. are dragged through the scalding tanks to remove the skin.
Following PETA’s complaint and subsequent FTC investigation, Canada Goose ceased claiming its standards ensure that its suppliers do not abuse animals. Next week, the group will be posting an ad in New York City outside the company’s flagship store that reads “That’s all that’s left of your Canadian goose jacket.”
PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.
