PETA has just received incriminating federal filings showing that while Cleveland Clinic publicly denied employee negligence and animal suffering documented in our six month undercover investigation to college, he privately confessed several, similar violations of federal animal welfare regulations.
Among other animal incidents at the Cleveland clinic documented between 2018 and 2021, workers did the following:
- Placing mice in “heavily contaminated” and “overcrowded” cages.
- The animals were left locked in cages overnight without food or water.
- Has repeatedly deviated from the approved protocols, including:
- Infecting mice with bacteria and injecting them with tumor cells
- Application of hair removal creams to the skin of mice causing lesions.
- Cutting off the tips of the tails of mice
In addition to rabbits and mice, the Cleveland Clinic maintains monkeys, pigs, rats, hamsters and other animals in its laboratories.
“These reports show again that the Cleveland Clinic is unable to comply with the most basic animal welfare rules. PETA is urging the National Institutes of Health to stop throwing taxpayer dollars down the drain in this sloppy, soulless facility. ”
—PETA Senior Vice President Katy Guillermo
Taxpayer dollars spill over into animal torture lair at Cleveland clinic
PETA has sent a letter to Patricia Brown, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Laboratory Animal Welfare Agency, urging to withdraw the Public Health Animal Welfare Guarantee given to the Cleveland Clinic, without which it cannot receive NIH funding for animal experiments. The agency provided the Cleveland Clinic with nearly $ 397 million in taxpayer funds from 2018 to 2021. alone…
We noted that NIH policy requires grantees to comply with federal animal welfare laws and Guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animalswhich the Cleveland Clinic apparently ignored.
