Detroit – A plush toy lion named Dan Detroit travels from PETA to new Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell, who recently joked that he wants to spice up training with a live lion, adding, “I don’t know if PETA is going. allow it. “
In a cover letter, PETA explains that Dan Detroit can be a symbol of support for all lions – whether they wear uniforms at Ford Field or those forced to live in barren backyard cages are used as props for photographs in roadside zoos or beaten to make them perform stunts in circuses.
“A lion has no place in a sterile cage or on a chain,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “If Coach Campbell makes Dan Detroit a part of the lion environment, he will help PETA spread the idea that lions are wild animals, not mascots, props or pets.”
PETA, whose motto is, “Animals are not meant to be used for entertainment,” and which opposes arrogance, a worldview based on human superiority, also sent Campbell a gift basket filled with vegan treats, including delicious chocolates. in the shape of a lion.

Congratulations on your new role as head coach of the Detroit Lions! We’ve heard your comments made as a joke about introducing a lion as a “pet” at the team’s facilities. As you mentioned, lions are wild animals and have no place in football stadiums (or roadside zoos, or in the backyards of people).
Fortunately, the world is now better than ever before aware of the suffering that exotic animals go through when they are forced to live in a sterile cage, forced to interact with members of the public and forced to perform humiliating stunts at the end of the chain and under threat of flogging. And that realization meant that the more dilapidated roadside zoos unable to care for animals were closed, abusive exhibitors lost their licenses (or even ended up in jail), and previously exploited big cats found new homes in accredited reserves.
So, while the Detroit Lions should remain the only lions at Ford Field, we thought we’d send you an addition to your crew: meet Dan Detroit Lion!
The inclusion of Dan Detroit in the Detroit Lions entourage will help end the abuse and exploitation of lions and other big cats as mascots or props, and will save the wild animal from suffering for life. He is a symbol of support for all lions, both on and off the field.
