New York – Viewers are returning to the set of talk shows, but maybe this is not the case with wild animals. PETA has received government records stating that renowned animal supplier Grant Kemmerer cannot display bears, primates, big cats, or other wild animals in any shows in the state until at least 2023. For years, unauthorized broadcasters and celebrities have been handling regulated species on the air, but following PETA’s report, New York City authorities appear to be taking harsh action against the practice.
In 2019, PETA notified the New York State Department of Environmental Protection (NYSDEC) that Kemmerer allowed prohibited direct contact between regulated wildlife and members of the public, namely Robert and Bindi Irwin, Jimmy Fallon, George Stephanopoulos and Wendy Williams. NYSDEC cited these incidents, as well as cases where Kemmerer allowed people at a house party to touch big cats, which PETA also drew the agency’s attention to in its denial of Kemmerer’s license, which he cannot reapply for for two years. PETA has released a new video warning other exhibitors that they may be next.
“Throwing frightened baby tigers and monkeys into the hands of talk show hosts was cruel in the days of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, and today it is unreasonable and illegal,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. PETA Celebrates Kemmerer’s license refusal as the beginning of the end for a wildlife show on New York City nightlife.
Kemmerer supplied animals for Evening show, The Wendy Williams Show, Fox and friends, and many others. While the animals can be introduced to the camera by public figures such as the Irvins, they are often owned and transported to the studio by Kemmerer, who keeps them on his Pennsylvania site. Animals used for talk show appearances tend to be separated from their mothers as infants, and some – who are dragged to set to work in front of bright lights and noisy studio audiences – are even still breastfed, such as the black bear. whom Kemmerer brought to Evening show…
PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to be used for entertainment” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
