Santa Clara, California. – PETA’s first billboard in an international campaign to encourage visitors to spare “sensitive, intelligent and curious” octopuses will be launched in the Koreatown of California before moving to other locations in the US and other countries.
“With everything we now know about octopus pain sensitivity and intelligence, and with so many delicious vegan options available today, it’s easy to make the traditional meals we love without killing or chopping up these animals,” says Xie. Jun (Ivy) from PETA. Yun. “The PETA billboard encourages everyone to show compassion for octopuses by leaving them out of our plates.”
Very intelligent, with a mini-brain in each tentacle, able to caress and kiss their partnersoctopuses communicate with each other using patterns and colors. They use tools and can unscrew the lids from cans just by seeing how it is done once, and some in captivity have successfully and very deftly bided their time to make the perfect escape. But due to arrogance – people’s belief that other species are inferior to our own – billions of octopuses and other invertebrates are killed every year for food. Some are eaten alive, including for the traditional Korean dish sannakji, in which a young octopus is sliced, sprinkled with sesame oil and served while it writhes.
The ad is located at 3368 El Camino Real.
