Raleigh, North Carolina – After a PETA field worker discovered a female pit bull named Star dead from heatstroke at a Halifax County compound on May 28, an animal rights group launched a flurry of Urgent Public Notices (PSA) on nets across North Carolina and parts of Virginia. urging immediate action for dogs: “Please report dogs without access to shade or drinking water.“, Says the 30-second commercial. “Their life is in your hands. The video will air for two weeks on WBTV (CBS), WGHP (FOX), WJZY (FOX), WRAL (NBC) and WRAZ (FOX).
PETA field workers have found many dogs are suffering from heat waves this year, including in northeastern North Carolina, and temperatures are expected to hit the mid-90s this weekend.
“This cute dog was essentially chained to death with no water or shadow nearby,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nachminovich. “We hope PETA’s PSA will not allow other dogs to stay outside in the scorching summer heat so they suffer and not even die.”
PETA notes that when temperatures rise, “yard dogs” can experience multisystem organ failure, brain damage, and death within minutes. In cases where authorities do not respond, he recommends that witnesses call 757-622-PETA.
The group notes that it is illegal to leave dogs outside in the heat and is punishable by fines and imprisonment. Star’s case is being investigated by the Halifax County Sheriff. Photos of the Star before and after her death are available here… (Warning: graphics)
PETA’s PSA also operates WAVY (NBC) and WTKR (CBS) in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
