Norfolk, Virginia. – PETA UK teamed up with the finest Flemish chef Nicholas Decloedt to put the world’s first vegan dish on a classic Belgian dish fried mussels– without damaging a single hair on the mussel chin and just in time for the National Day of Belgium. Complete recipe– which PETA will send to the Belgian Embassy and Belgian American Clubs and Associations in the USA –and video available here…

The Decloedt recipe even turns mashed potatoes into a baked molded edible vegan shell, which is then stuffed with shiitake mushrooms stewed in kombu seaweed broth for an oceanic flavor. Serve with thick Belgian fries and Bon Appetit!

Decloedt is no stranger to vegan cuisine as its great Brussels restaurant, Hummus x Hydrangea, was named the best vegan restaurant in the world in 2019.

“Anything can be done these days, from hamburgers and fritters to foie gras and mule fries,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is looking forward to celebrating Belgium’s National Day with delicious food that will keep bivalve clams in their oceanfront homes.”

In addition to being animal-friendly, choosing vegan seafood helps protect the ocean, as stated in a new Netflix documentary. Sea piracywhich explores the global fishing industry and challenges the notion of “sustainable” fisheries. For example, mussel farms produce “marine debris,” which includes broken shells, ropes, floats, and other debris that is often ingested by marine animals. Left behind in their ocean homes, mussels and other bivalve molluscs filter pollutants and other harmful chemicals from the water, playing a vital role in the ecosystem.

PETA, whose motto is in part “The animals are not ours to eat,” and which opposes arrogance, a human-superiority-centered worldview, offers a free vegan starter kit on its website. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
