SOS stands for exploited mothers
Her, not yours
When you think about the worst ways to exploit people, animals, each other, and our planet, you should think about your cheesy pizza. The dairy industry is exploitative from start to finish: female cows are sexually abused, babies are torn from their mothers, our water and land are wasted, and an unhealthy product is produced. It’s time to call dairy products what they are: excellence…
Cheese is a product of speciation and sexism
In the dairy industry, workers forcibly inseminate cows and kidnap their young. The cow needs to have a baby before she can give milk – hers, not yours. By raping animals with weapons and tools, workers chase mothers for their milk and put them in machines that pull mercilessly on their delicate udders. Up to 50% of milk producing cows suffer from painful mastitis (swollen, infected mammary glands).
“What about babies?”
Males and “extra” heifers are useless for the dairy industry, so they are either raised for veal or sent directly to slaughter. Eventually, when the mother is so exhausted that she can no longer be used for milk, they will also kill her. Milk-based cheese, yogurt and ice cream are made by people who view the female reproductive system as commodities. When workers can no longer use the cow’s body for profit, they destroy it.
Breeding, milking and killing cows destroys the environment
In the United States alone, cows used for dairy farming generate over 1 billion pounds of waste every day. Runoff from industrial farms and grazing animals pollutes rivers and lakes and leads to ocean dead zones. Over the past 50 years, more than 90% of the Amazon area has been cleared to make way for farm animals, and this is just one of the reasons why livestock is a major contributor to climate change.
Unhealthy foods and environmental racism
Quite often, industrial farms evade pollution control regulations by spraying liquid manure into the air, which disproportionately affects people in black and low-income communities who are constantly exposed to unbearable stench and forced to inhale toxic dung sprays. Environmental racism is real, and animal husbandry is a huge culprit.
According to the California Senate, “research has shown that [animal waste] lagoons release toxic chemicals into the air that can cause inflammatory, immune, irritant and neurochemical problems in humans. ”
Obviously people shouldn’t drink cow’s milk! About 70% of African Americans are lactose intolerant, and in general people of color are less likely to digest lactose. However, this “product” is normalized and imposed on low-income students in schools, and we pay more for vegan meals at places like Starbucks.
SOS’s mission is to show the world that breast milk belongs to her.
