Progress! The European Commission has just announced plans to ban animal cages on farms after pressure from more than 1.4 million compassionate people, including PETA supporters.
This day will go down in history – and it will mean that soon 300 million chickens, pigs, calves, rabbits, ducks, geese, quails and other animals on farms in the EU will no longer be kept in close quarters. cells for life.
The cells will be decommissioned by 2027.
“Animals are living things, and we have a moral responsibility to society to ensure that farm conditions reflect this.”
– Stella Kyriakides, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety
What is the End of the Cell Age?
Launched in 2018 by 170 groups including PETA and Compassion in World Farming, the #EndTheCageAge European Citizenship Initiative (ECI) is a collaborative journey. Aim? To make life less miserable for the more than 300 million caged animals and other housing systems in the EU.
This is the first successful early intervention in the protection of farm animals.
The campaign included events across the EU and partnerships with influential MEPs and celebrities to ensure that the European Commission listens to our voices. It also launched a new covert investigation revealing that vulnerable young calves are caged and isolated on EU farms, ducks and geese are savagely abused for foie gras, quails are kept in cramped cages containing up to 80 birds, and rabbits spend their whole caged lives are so small they can barely stand, let alone jump.
What’s next?
The Commission intends to “put forward a legislative proposal by the end of 2023 to phase out and permanently ban the use of cages for all species and categories of animals mentioned in the initiative.”
By the end of next year, the Commission will evaluate the proposal, which will then require the approval of the European Parliament and the EU Council. We will keep you informed!
