Davenport, Iowa – Joaquin Phoenix PETA revealed that the two bears featured in Bearadise Ranch, due to appear at the Mississippi Valley Fair this week, served as models for one of his films, Disney Brother bear… Therefore, he sent a letter to the owner of the roadside zoo, Monica Velde, in which he urged her to stop traveling shows and offered to help with the transfer of the bears from forced use in show business and their move to an accredited reserve.

“I voiced the film’s protagonist, Kenai, who, as a lesson in empathy, magically transforms to be able to see the world through the eyes of a bear, and now I ask you to see through their eyes,” writes the Oscar winner. “These bears deserve more than life on the road, where everything that is natural and important to them is taken away from them, and if you put yourself in their place, I’m sure you will see that too.”

On the road, Bearadise Ranch operators keep the bears in transport cages where they can hardly turn around and cannot help but end up in their own waste. During performances, bears climb stairs, carry a basketball while walking on their hind legs, pull hoops over their heads, and perform other tricks – probably because they remember what would happen to them if they didn’t.

PETA – whose motto is partly that “animals are not ours to be used for entertainment” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…

This is followed by a letter from Phoenix to Velde.

    Dear Monica,

I just found out that two bears from your traveling show, Bambi and Bruno, served as models for Disney’s Brother bear… I voiced the film’s protagonist, Kenai, who, as a lesson in empathy, is magically transformed to be able to see the world through the eyes of a bear, and now I ask you to see through their eyes. These bears deserve more than life on the road, where everything that is natural and important to them is taken away from them, and if you put yourself in their shoes, I’m sure you will see that too.

You know firsthand that bears are curious and challenging animals that love to climb, dig, gather food and play. Their keen sense of smell and plate-sized paws evolved so that they could seek out mates and food over great distances, but these carefully honed traits are wasted at county fairs where they are sent to transport cages when they are not. they pull hoops over their heads and carry basketballs in front of a crowd of strangers.

Bambi and Bruno will never experience life in the wild. They will never be able to sniff out salmon trails or cross mountains – but that doesn’t mean their lives won’t improve. Could you think about putting an end to trickery and travel and giving all the bears in your venture a chance to just live like bears? If you want to do what is really best for them, let me help you arrange for their transfer to an accredited refuge.

    Sincerely,

    Joaquin Phoenix
