Lincoln, Nebraska. – PETA would like to thank – and a box of vegan chocolates – Boiler Brewing Company, a brewery known for its rare and exotic craft beers, after agreeing to stop selling beers made with civet coffee, coffee obtained from the excrement of Asian palm civets contained in cages.
This decision follows a recent video ad by PETA Asia, which shows civets being kept in small, waste-filled cages with little to no room to move around, and fed a high-content diet or exclusively coffee berries for kopi-luwak, which is sold in tourists in cafes around the world for up to $ 80 per cup.
“Most people would have a hard time relaxing with a pint of beer if they knew it was related to cat abuse or cat waste,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “Since kopi luwak is cruelty in the cup, PETA encourages everyone to enjoy great vegan beer and coffee instead.”
The copi-luwaka industry also poses a risk of pandemic: keeping animals in cages among their own waste exposes them to stress, suppresses their immune systems and creates a breeding ground for zoonotic diseases. SARS has moved from civet cats to humans, and it is also believed that civet cats may have been an intermediate carrier of the novel coronavirus. Civet cats, no longer needed for the production of kopi-luwaks, are sometimes sold to live animal markets, such as the one where the new coronavirus is believed to have originated.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat or otherwise abuse” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
