This shouldn’t happen to monkeys, but it does. PETA Asia researchers visited coconut farms in Thailand and found monkeys with heavy metal collars attached to their necks that were forced to spend long hours climbing trees and picking coconuts, including for one of Thailand’s largest coconut milk producers, Chaokoh. In nature, baby macaques with pigtails – one of the favorite targets of coconut breeders – must breastfeed, learn from their mothers how to groom, kiss, and begin to explore their surroundings. On coconut farms, animals are taught to cope with violence and fear, and at night they are kept chained up in dirty trash-strewn areas, although humane harvesting methods are readily available.

After learning of the ugly origins of Chaokoh’s coconut milk, more than 33,000 stores stopped selling it, including Wegmans, Kroger, Target, Albertsons and Safeway. But the Korean chain Lotte Plaza Market, which has stores in Florida, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia, still sells these products.
