But the creatures doomed to suffer in this real-life hellish landscape are not souls atoning for their sins – they are animals trapped in the laboratories of the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass).
The university reports obtained by PETA reveal horrors that could hardly have been rivaled if Lucifer had burned the place himself.
During one of the animal welfare violations in 2018, eight mice – three adults and five babies who were only one day old – drowned when a leaking roof caused their cages to fill with water. The water from the spill also soaked the mice in 15 other cages. In the same year, eight zebra finches starved to death after the lab staff forgot to put food in the cage. Staff were unable to determine how long the birds were without food.

In 2019, 25 zebrafish died of overheating due to a malfunctioning cooling system. Since UMass was also unable to ensure that the sensor in the room was working properly, lab staff did not notice the sudden rise in temperature until it was too late.

For other tests, experimenters leave hamsters in constant darkness for days or weeks, which they interrupt by blinking lights or shaking animal cells to repeatedly disrupt their sleep cycle and impair heart function. When the experimenters are done with them, the animals are killed.
It’s not just these hamsters that live in the dark.
