Boston – Following the discovery of documents revealing dozens of federal animal welfare violations at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), PETA is turning to the Boston Police Department for an investigation. More than 163 mice, rats and sheep have been affected in what appears to be a felony, violation of government bans on cruelty to animals. The law makes it a crime to deprive animals of “necessary food” and subject them to “unnecessary torture, suffering or cruelty of any kind.”
PETA has solved 55 cases of animal cruelty. Sheep and mice were denied adequate pain relief after surgery. Several animals starved to death when workers were unable to feed them. When humane euthanasia was required, the mice were left to suffer, and the living, presumed dead, were placed in the refrigerator after unsuccessful euthanasia procedures. Seven mice had to be euthanized after the experimenters placed a sponge on their surgical incisions, which blocked their access to food and water. Twelve mice developed ulcers and were euthanized after the experimenter injected them with an unapproved substance. Four mice died after being operated on by an unfinished experimenter. Thirteen rats died when staff did not notice a malfunction of the experimental equipment.
“The experimenters and staff at Brigham and the Women’s Hospital are clearly not qualified to even feed the animals properly, let alone cut them up and experiment on them,” says PETA Senior Vice President Katy Guillermo. “PETA is urging Boston police to investigate and, if justified, to throw the book at this institution for violating state law.”
Research shows that 90% of all basic research, most of which involves animals, does not lead to cures in humans. In a letter sent today, PETA is urging BWH to accept the Research Modernization Agreement, which proposes a strategy to replace cruel and mindless animal experimentation with human-related methods.
Documents are available upon request.
PETA, whose motto is partly that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
