Norfolk, Virginia. – A new online survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of PETA found that 51% of Americans-as well as 66% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34—Supporting the closure of slaughterhouses permanently1 (up from 42%2 and 54% last year, respectively) after they became COVID-19 hotspots during the pandemic, PETA reported today.
The study comes as the meat industry is grappling with legal action over its COVID-19 allegations: last year, pork giant Smithfield said closing slaughterhouses to protect workers from the coronavirus would have dire consequences for the country’s “meat stocks” , while pork was allegedly exported abroad. USA – and while the USA reportedly stored “hundreds of millions of pounds” of pork in refrigerators.
“Slaughterhouses kill billions of animals and are breeding grounds for deadly diseases that threaten the health of all people on the planet,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Most Americans agree with PETA: it’s time to shut them down.”
PETA notes that the new coronavirus originated in a “wet market” where live and dead animals were sold for human consumption, swine flu originated on an industrial farm in the United States, and other influenza viruses have been linked to chickens. COVID-19 has infected more than 58,000 slaughterhouse workers and killed nearly 300 since the pandemic began, and since not all deaths and deaths have been reported, the actual numbers are likely even higher.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
Survey method:
The survey was conducted online in the United States by the Harris Poll on behalf of PETA from June 17 to 21, 2021, among 2,083 adults aged 18 and over. This online survey is not based on probabilistic sampling, so the calculation of theoretical sampling error is not possible.
