For the last 40 years, asian elephant named Lucy lived in subartic conditions for Edmonton Valley Zoo in Alberta, Canada. Cher, co-founder of an animal welfare organization Free the wilderness sent a letter to the zoo with a proposal to help Lucy sending an independent elephant expert to examine and determine her health.
After some follow-up correspondence between Free The Wild and the zoo director, they were advised that their expert veterinarian’s credentials would be reviewed for a joint assessment of Lucy’s condition at her next assessment.
Meanwhile, there was correspondence from Jane Goodall Institute vet Dr. Rick Quinn, on the JGI’s findings on Lucy’s health. Dr. Quinn has authorized Free The Wild to publish a letter with his latest discoveries, which Free The Wild believes are scientific and fair. Free The Wild has notified the zoo that their proposal to send and fund an independent veterinarian expert on elephants is still valid.
Born in 1975 g., Lucy has never been with other Asian elephants, and her only companion was unfortunately taken away 2006 year Edmonton Valley Zoo’s limited opening hours mean that even the company is small. Lucy is an 1000 lbs. is overweight and suffers from severe arthritis and foot disease. She can hardly bear weight on her hind legs and due to an inappropriate diet suffers from dental problems and painful colic, due to which she fainted as she lay, slapping her belly with her torso.
With no place to swim, mud to wallow in, or trees to scratch on, Free The Wild is committed to working with the Edmonton Valley Zoo to find a peaceful solution to secure Lucy’s release. Though 45 years, Lucy appreciated 15-20 years old left her life.
Free the wild seeks to collaborate on existing campaigns in Alberta, Canada, and not only for Lucy to live her golden years with love and care in an accredited sanctuary.
