West Valley City, Utah – An alligator attack during a baby’s birthday celebration at Scales and Tails Utah on Saturday led PETA to email outfit owner Shane Richins this morning and launch an online petition calling for all animals to be sent to reputable institutions and the store to close, contrary to modern beliefs about wild animals and poses a danger to people who should not touch them at all.

The harrowing footage of the incident shows the alligator pinching the handler’s hand, dragging it into the pool and locking it up on the death list, watching the children scream in fear. The guest ran into the aviary and was able to save the woman. After several tense moments, the guest was also able to escape from the pool.

“Encouraging people to pay to see the top predator used as props for a birthday party is disaster greed,” says Debbie Metzler, deputy director of animal law enforcement at the PETA Foundation. “PETA is calling on this dangerous venture to allow these wild animals to enter sites where they can live well in a suitable habitat and be respected enough to be left alone.”

In nature, alligators swim long distances and can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour. They are by nature afraid of humans and would rather flee than fight. In petting zoos, they are enclosed in enclosures that are only a fraction of their natural habitat and are exposed to constant unwanted contact with humans, which can make them aggressive, and do not teach visitors about the natural behavior of animals.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to be used for entertainment” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
