Harisburg, North Carolina – On Saturday, PETA representatives, the late Doris Mudgett’s family from Majette’s Grocery and an internationally renowned award-winning writer. Shelia P. Moses will cut the ribbon on a brand new Small Free Library donated by PETA in partnership with the Northampton County Small Free Library Project, which was started by Moses, a native of Rich Square. Volunteers who keep all the small free libraries and keep them in order will also be present.

PETA made the donation after more than 15 years of working with families in Northampton County to help care for dogs sent outside on chains or in a paddock. The group provides free sturdy wooden dog kennels, insulating straw mat and nutritious food, as well as preventive care such as deworming, flea and fly treatment, and transportation for neuter / neuter operations. PETA has also launched the free Barks & Books book program in recent years, giving away hundreds of children’s books with a message of kindness and compassion, and the group has added books from this collection to the new Little Free Library.
“Everyone should have access to stories that broaden their horizons and encourage compassion for everyone,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nachminovich. “Donating a free small library is a meaningful way for PETA to continue to partner with the Northampton County community, and we are honored to do our part.”
The ribbon cutting ceremony will be streamed on PETA’s Facebook Live. The PETA Library is dedicated to Mudgett, a prestigious member of society who has owned her grocery store for 50 years and has survived a large loving family, including her 58-year-old husband Thornton Mudgett.
