Oscar de la Renta banned fur after decades of pressure

Victory! Next decades due to the destruction of the PETA runway, protests, some carefully pounded tofu cream pies and pressure from activists from around the world, the fashion brand Oscar de la Renta has finally banned fur. While nothing can bring back the multitude of animals that have been electrocuted, gassed, or otherwise killed for the profit of this fashion house, it’s never too late to do the right thing. PETA recognizes Oscar de la Renta for following the lead of other designers – and virtually every department store – in cementing the decline of the violent and terrible fur industry.

Thirty years ago, PETA staged our first nude protest at the Oscar de la Renta runway show. This mind-blowing stunt brought us and a member of The Go-Go, handcuffed to a banner that read “It’s better to go naked than wear fur” on the cover of the magazine New York Timesstyle section.

Daring PETA activists will continue to crash at various Oscar de la Renta fashion shows in the years to come. Determined to end arrogance, we never missed an opportunity to inform models, celebrities, designers, fashion media and the public that animals are suffering from fur.

The fur industry is a dying business

The declining consumer demand for fur and the ever-increasing number of bans on its production and sale, among other things, are other reasons why fur is a poor investment.

For decades, PETA and our international affiliates have demonstrated appalling brutality against fur farms. Researchers have documented that the animals were shocked, clubbed, gassed, and even skinned alive.

Moreover, pressing sick and stressed animals in unsanitary conditions creates ideal conditions for the reproduction of dangerous zoonotic diseases that can spread to humans. For example, COVID-19 has spread like wildfire in fur farms around the world.

Fashion brands Saint Laurent and Brioni still need to ditch fur

Encourage Saint Laurent and Brioni to follow the lead of Oscar de la Renta and a host of other designers and retailers who have made the ethical and logical decision to ban fur. It only takes a minute with a phone or computer, so what are you waiting for?
