Waseka, Minnesota. – “Look at the personality. Go vegan. “This is PETA’s message on a new billboard honoring 3,000 mother pigs and 9,000 piglets who reportedly died in a burning industrial barn in Woodville Pork last month. The ad hangs near the site of the fire.
“Mother pigs and their babies deserve no more to have their throats cut in slaughterhouses than they deserve to die in a fire,” says PETA Senior Director Daniel Katz. “The PETA billboard is an urgent reminder that kindness starts in the kitchen – we can help prevent such tragedies by eating vegan dishes.”
Today’s meat industry squeezes mother pigs into narrow metal stalls, a little larger than their bodies, and forces them to become pregnant or breastfeed almost constantly. Workers chop off pigs’ tails, cut their teeth with pliers and castrate males – all without any pain relief. In the slaughterhouse, workers hang them upside down – sometimes still conscious – and bleed to death.
The World Health Organization has confirmed that eating bacon, hot dogs, ham and other meats can cause cancer. Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals each year; reduces your own risk of getting cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and many other diseases; and helps prevent future epidemics and pandemics. Swine flu, avian flu, and COVID-19 arose from keeping and killing animals for food.
