Brigham and the Women’s Hospital: Crippling, Tormented, and Hungry Animals

Massachusetts law prohibits animals from “depriving[d] necessary livelihoods ”, tortured, killed or“ subjected to unnecessary torture, suffering or cruelty of any kind ”. The long list of horrors revealed by PETA in the Freedom of Information Act looks like lot as cruelty and suffering to us:

• Four mice died and another had to be euthanized when the staff did not notice that some were trapped on top of the enrichment device, some were left “on top of the food bin,” and one had its tail trapped between the cage and lid.
• Thirteen rats died because the experimenters neglected to observe them and did not notice the malfunction of the laboratory equipment.
• Several mice and rats were left to languish beyond the specified humane endpoints, suffering additional pain and suffering.
