PETA’s investigation found nearly 2 million chickens – some dead, some alive, all caged together – in huge barns. The workers tried to kill several sick or wounded chickens by breaking their necks. In some cases, this did not work, and the chickens were left to die slowly and painfully.

PETA Asia visited Thailand’s coconut harvesting areas and found that the monkeys, who were likely abducted from their natural habitats, were equipped with rigid metal collars, chained and forced to harvest coconuts. Among the brands receiving coconut milk from monkey labor is Chaokoh, which Walmart refuses to stop selling despite its many ethical options for coconut milk.

Each of these companies has the right to evaluate their suppliers and require them to comply with higher standards. Given the huge market share these companies own, they can make major changes in many industries simply by having basic integrity. They may reconsider their dealings with suppliers that harm animals. But these businesses clearly don’t care about anything – not even the dire suffering they support – other than money. Until they get better, there are many other stores out there that are meeting the growing demand for products sourced from ethical and sustainable sources. For example, Costco, Target, Wegmans, Cost Plus World Market and Super King Markets have severed ties with Chaokoh coconut milk after the PETA campaign.
