Westlake, Ohio – On Thursday, just days before Valentine’s Day, a squad of chimpanzee masked PETA protesters will descend to American Greetings headquarters and deliver a giant Valentine’s Day plea as part of a protest to urge the company to “have a heart” and stop degrading the image great apes on his cards.
When: Thursday 11 February 12 noon
Where: American Greetings, American Blvd. 1, Westlake
Chimpanzees and other great apes can face extinction over the course of our lives, and American Greetings with their clown images interfere with conservation efforts. Studies show that unnatural depictions of chimpanzees in costumes displayed in studios or interacting with humans mislead consumers into believing that the species is thriving and not endangered. These images are also increasing black market demand for endangered great apes as pets, one of the main driving forces driving them towards extinction.
“PETA is asking American Greetings to show heart this Valentine’s Day and stop exploiting chimpanzees,” says PETA primatologist Julia Galucci. “Chimpanzees are not models or props, and photographs of them wearing clothes or sitting at tables endanger these endangered animals.”
PETA – whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours” – opposes arrogance, a worldview based on human superiority.
