Providence, Rhode Island – PETA just discovered flagrant and ongoing violations of federal animal welfare rules in Brown University laboratories, prompting the group to write a letter today to school president Christine Paxon asking for a zero-tolerance policy on animal welfare violations to address the incompetence and chronic disregard of obvious animals. In particular, PETA asked her to revoke the right to experiment with experimenters who do not follow the directives of the veterinary staff. In total, from March 2019 to April 2021, 23 violations were recorded in the protocols:almost one violation per month…
Among other incidents, records documented that eight mice died of starvation and 12 died of dehydration, the mouse survived carbon dioxide poisoning and woke up in a refrigerator designed for dead animals, the mouse was found with a tumor that exceeded the university’s own size, and the experimenters failed. put the animals to sleep in time, which led to the discovery of the mouse in a “dying state” – probably with shortness of breath, sunken eyes and inability to reach for food or water.
“The agony of death from hunger or thirst is the same whether the victim is a mouse, ape or a human,” says PETA vice president Dr. Alka Chandna. PETA calls on President Brown to challenge this widespread callousness before incompetent experimenters kill more animals.
The documents also show that several experimenters deviated from protocols approved by the university’s supervisory authority, such as not observing animals after they were used in surgery. PETA contacted Brown about animal welfare violations four years ago, pointing out incidents in which monkeys and ferrets escaped from their cages after workers failed to properly protect the enclosures, and bats starved to death after workers failed. were able to feed them. Last year, at the start of the pandemic, PETA urged Brown to be transparent after the school urged experimenters to begin “curtailing research,” which would have meant killing hundreds of animals in its laboratories. However, the university still received $ 100 million in taxpayer money last year, about half of which went to animal experiments.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
