Salisbury, North Carolina – Following a leaked video of a Salisbury Police Department officer picking up a K-9 named Zuul by the leash and collar around his neck, hanging him up in a choke hold and hitting him in the body. Local PETA members will join other residents in the affected areas at tomorrow’s virtual meeting of Salisbury City Council to demand responses from elected officials. The group will also demand that the animal cruelty be held accountable.
When: March 16, Tuesday, 18.00
Where: Virtual City Council Meeting (https://salisburync.gov/Government/City-Council)
“In 2021, the police department, which is backing one of its employees instead of being accused of violating state law for physically assaulting a gullible dog that serves this community, should not be running K-9,” says the president of PETA. Ingrid Newkirk. “The community deserves action and responses, including as to why some elected officials apparently knew about the video for months but have not taken any action so far.”
During the attack on Zuul, people in the police car from which the video was filmed can be heard saying, “We’re fine; no witnesses ”and“ can you turn off my cameras? “- which makes them, in the eyes of PETA, accessories of cruelty. Police Chief Jerry Stokes said the violence was taken “out of context.” In a letter to Stokes, PETA noted that there was no context in which such violence would be acceptable, and that his remarks suggest that police dog abuse is not unusual in the department. The group is calling for a criminal investigation and prosecution of the abuser depicted in the video by an independent third-party agency.
PETA, whose motto is, “Animals are not meant to be used by us for entertainment” and which opposes arrogance, a worldview based on human superiority, also spoke to the Salisbury Police Department with posters reading “Justice for Zuul!”
