Indianapolis – On Thursday evil PETA supporters in brightly colored latex mouse masks will run to Eli Lilly headquarters to kick up the company’s legs for refusing to ban a widely discredited, horribly brutal forced swimming trial, even though most of its competitors have done so. The Mice will display a 5-foot banner with the names of these competitors, including Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer, and challenging Eli Lilly, “They’ve all banned the forced swim test – why can’t you?” In the test, mice and other small animals are forced to swim to avoid drowning, presumably to demonstrate antidepressant effects. However, since 1993, Eli Lilly has tested 3,400 mice and rats, and none of the drugs developed in this way are on the market.
When: Thursday 16 September 12:00
Where: Eli Lilly Headquarters, 893 S. Delaware St. (at the intersection with E. McCarty Street), Indianapolis
“Eli Lilly clings to the forced swimming exam like a stubborn child,” says PETA senior vice president Katy Guillermo. PETA urges the company to recognize science by banning this useless test.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence.
