PETA has long been at the forefront of ethical science, promoting effective and compassionate animal-free research methods, and this week thousands of attendees at the 11th World Congress on Alternatives and the Uses of Animals in the Life Sciences will hear about our vast efforts and progress.

At the world’s leading conference on animal-free humane research, PETA scientists from around the world will highlight the growing scientific evidence for animal sensitivity, PETA’s successful efforts to end animal testing in the food industry worldwide, and the ethical implications of the high incidence of untreated pain in animals used in laboratories, among other relevant topics.

It is a fact that rats and mice are emotionally complex and intelligent animals.

They don’t deserve to be tortured in cruel experiments.

PETA scientists will also address the pointlessness of several common tests for anxiety and depression in other animals (which are poor models for such experiments). These include the forced swim test, in which the experimenters throw mice and other rodents into a glass filled with water and force them to swim to save their lives, and the tail hanging test, in which the experimenters hang the mice upside down and leave them hanging from their sensitive objects. … tails for a few minutes. Our scientists will also debate whether continued use of procedures that cause irreversible and debilitating brain damage in primates is ethical or scientific justification. (Hint: Is not.)

In addition, our scientists will chair meetings, present posters and make oral presentations on the scientific benefits of using non-animal antibodies and replacing the use of fish, mice and rats in toxicity studies.

The conference, which runs from 23 August to 2 September, will showcase PETA’s groundbreaking research modernization deal, a common sense roadmap to phase out animal testing in the EU, US and India, and an award-winning film … Subjectswhich documents the experiences of three PETA scientists.

Animal testing is not only brutal, but also a waste of time, money and lives. Help lab animals suffer by supporting PETA’s Research Modernization Project, a practical strategy to optimize research for the treatment of disease by investing in non-animal research that is relevant to humans.
