Madison, Wisconsin. – See the following statement by PETA Senior Vice President Katy Guillermo regarding federal filings that reveal serious breaches of animal welfare at the University of Wisconsin Primate Center in Madison.
While the USDA correctly cited the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center for two federal animal welfare violations that PETA brought to the agency’s attention, this wrist slap – documented in a just-published federal inspection report – is untrue. t prevent negligence and incompetence. According to other documents obtained by PETA at the request of the Freedom of Information Act, the primate center gave the monkey 1,000 times more medicine than it was prescribed, overdosed the monkey with the test compound – resulting in death – failed to provide the necessary pain relief, failed to protect the monkeys from others stressful monkeys and allowed the monkeys to escape from their enclosures. PETA has reported all of these issues, but so far without consequences. The Primate Center has already harmed too many monkeys and should lose both its experimental license and federal funding.
