Somerset, Pennsylvania. – Below you can find a statement by Rachel Matthews, director of the PETA Captive Law Enforcement Foundation, regarding the newly announced birth of a baby elephant at the Pittsburgh Zoo International Conservation Center. object with history of errors:

Federal records show that in 2017, the Pittsburgh Zoo was understaffed and unprepared for the birth of a baby elephant that was taken from its mother, put on public display, and died at just 3 months. PETA encourages the zoo to learn from that tragedy and allow the mother to raise this vulnerable new calf and enable it to live as natural as possible. The zoo’s elephant breeding program must end immediately.

Last year, PETA exposed a claim by a company to trap elephants in Zimbabwe. The institution would pay to trap the animals, a process in which snipers typically shoot calming or tranquilizers at young elephants from helicopters, which are then used to chase down their protective families. Conservationists and elephant specialists strongly condemn these traumatic surgeries.

PETA – whose motto is partly that “animals are not ours to be used for entertainment” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
