Raleigh, North Carolina – See the following statement by PETA Vice President Shalin Gala regarding animal testing conducted by North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in an effort to develop a human nasal spray to treat COVID-19:
Spraying “fake cells” into the noses of frightened mice and monkeys caught in labs trying to create a therapeutic agent against human COVID-19 is about as clever as putting a partition door on a submarine. Even the experimenter Ke Cheng, who performed these tests, admits that he “would not say [he is] 100% Confidence “in the success of therapy in human trials.
Here’s an inconvenient fact: The National Institutes of Health states that 95% of all new drugs that have been shown to be safe and effective in animal tests have not been tested in humans. If we are serious about tackling COVID-19 effectively and quickly, we need to modernize the outdated and ineffective drug development process from animal testing to priority testing strategies that focus on humans rather than animals. Moderna, Pfizer and BioNTech did not wait for lengthy and unreliable tests in monkeys and mice before starting clinical trials of their vaccines in humans, proving that animal tests are not needed to develop safe and effective drugs.
It’s time to shift the focus away from yesterday’s science and embrace the new model these COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers have developed and take it one step further by replacing animal tests with more reliable and relevant human testing. For human health, it is time for the FDA to replace the long-term animal-intensive drug development process with a process that focuses on science that is relevant to humans.
