Saratoga Springs, New York – See the following statement from PETA and NYCLASS regarding Governor Katie Hochul’s award of the trophy to Travers Stakes Essential Quality winner:
It is alarming that Katie Hochul, the first female governor of New York to emerge from a sexual harassment scandal, has presented the award to the winner of Travers Stakes, Essential Quality, whose owner, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is widely believed to have kidnapped his own daughters and threatened his ex-wife with violence. Governor Hochul now heads a state that donates more than $ 230 million annually in subsidies to the racing industry, some of which go to bolster the pockets of billionaire owners like Al Maktoum. This corporate wealth must end, and the hundreds of millions of dollars that make the rich even richer must be donated to New Yorkers.
PETA – whose motto, among other things, is that “animals do not belong to us to be used for entertainment or abuse in other ways” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority.
