Washington – See this statement by Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, a primate scientist at PETA, regarding the government’s plan to spend $ 30 million next year on raising monkeys for experimentation:

Sending millions of taxpayer dollars to breed monkeys for vaccines is like investing in the Titanic. Over the past six decades, billions of dollars have been dumped at national primate research centers, but they have failed to breed healthy monkeys; failed to produce vaccines against HIV, Zika virus, tuberculosis and malaria; and didn’t even comply with animal welfare laws. The National Institutes of Health, which plays with our health and our tax revenue, recognizes that 95% of new drugs that are safe and effective in animals have not gone through clinical trials in humans.… The need for SARS-CoV-2 vaccines has not changed this obvious fact. There is an urgent need to invest in human rather than animal research, and this is where our funds should be directed.
