“I’ll see you in court.” This is the gist of what PETA told the three government agencies after they repeatedly asked them to publish documents about gruesome experiments paid by taxpayers and conducted in government laboratories, and each time they were blocked.
PETA Sues Government
PETA has filed a lawsuit in Washington, DC against the US Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). As taxpayers, we have a right to know how the government is using our money to fund animal experiments, including food deprivation, proximity to drowning, electric shock, and other equally dire acts that have repeatedly failed to cure people or otherwise have not promoted medical science.
PETA requests have been sidelined for over a year
Freedom of information law requires agencies to respond to requests within 20 business days of receiving them, but PETA has been awaiting responses to some of our requests for more than a year… Enough is enough. Animals that are tortured, maimed, deprived and killed in windowless laboratories cannot wait a second.
The government tries to cover up horrific taxpayer-funded abuses
PETA has requested records related to NIMH experiments on animals, including NIH experimenter Elizabeth Murray’s notorious “monkey fear” study in which she cuts monkeys’ heads, slices off portions of their skulls, and then injects toxins into their brains to cause brain injury. … Deal damage before scaring animals with realistic spiders and snakes.
It also deprives monkeys of food and water, surgically attaches head-pillars to their skulls, and holds them in place for several hours. Many are forced to live in social isolation and all are ultimately killed. Murray’s experiments, which have received more than $ 49 million from the federal budget, claim to have shed light on neuropsychiatric disorders in humans, but they have not led to any cure or drug for humans in the 30 years that have been conducted.
PETA Sues Because It Is Our Right To Know The Truth
If the government insists on spending hundreds of millions of dollars in our taxes annually on animal torture chambers, it must answer us. PETA is suing public records needed to prosecute these arrogant experimenters.
We’re also looking for records related to tests on mice and rats by National Institutes of Health experimenter Heather Cameron, in which she kicks them, deprives them of food, holds them in small Plexiglas tubes, and immerses them in beakers of water for up to 20 minutes.
We will not back down
These perverse experimenters probably know that the torture methods they use under the guise of “research” are catastrophically flawed, and some have even acknowledged their shortcomings in scientific papers, but they have not stopped using them. Such experiments are a challenge to human decency and a disgrace to science. Research money should be diverted to models that are relevant to humans and to advanced methods that open up perspectives for humans. As long as our own government obsessively spends its citizens’ money on inconceivably horrific crimes against humanity, we will speak openly, challenge it, and hold it accountable.
