Atlanta – Following international outrage over the shooting of another beloved lion in Zimbabwe by an American trophy hunter, PETA plans to advertise outside UPS headquarters urging the company to stop shipping animal heads and other body parts home to hunters. a practice that supports the trophy hunting industry and helps perverse hunters show off their prey.

Philip Smith, a Missouri-based physical therapist, is said to have paid $ 30,000 to kill a lion known as Mopane, who, like Cecil the lion, was wounded and languished in intense pain all day. Mopane has led two prides since his fellow Sidhule was killed by another hapless trophy hunter in 2019. Smith and his guides reportedly used the elephant carcass to lure the unsuspecting Mopane out of Hwange National Park, where hunting is illegal, to nearby Antoinette’s Farm – apparently the same place where Cecil was killed by American dentist Walter Palmer in 2015. Smith reportedly fired an arrow at Mopan, but it was such a bad shot that he fatally wounded him and then was unable to effectively track him down, if not at all. to finish him off quickly.

“A lion like Mopane is a leader, a father, and a beloved member of his community, but to a trophy hunter he is just a head to hang on the wall of a home’s lair,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. PETA urges UPS to stop letting these perverse pleasure killers ship animal carcasses.

PETA notes that hunters kill millions of animals every year and have contributed to the extinction of species around the world, including the Tasmanian tiger and auk. Unlike natural predators, which kill mostly sick and weak individuals, trophy hunters specifically look for large and healthy animals that are necessary to maintain the population size.

After Palmer killed Cecil, more than 40 airlines agreed to stop shipping wildlife trophies, and nearly 150,000 PETA supporters urged UPS to follow suit.

PETA – whose motto, among other things, is that “animals do not belong to us to be used for entertainment or abuse in other ways” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority.
