San Diego – “When will Petco stop selling animals?” This is a question that a PETA spokesman and former Petco employee who says the suffering she went through there led her to a career in animal welfare will ask executives at the company’s virtual AGM on Wednesday. PETA acquired Petco shares in January to address management directly. The group will also step up the pressure when a PETA member, painted to look like a snake and chained to a cramped tank to mimic the brutal conditions in which snakes are transported, protests outside a Petco store near the company’s headquarters in San Diego. Protesters will hold posters encouraging the company shed cruelty.

    When: Wednesday 21 July 12:00 to 13:00

Where: Petco, 11160 Rancho Carmel Dr., San Diego

“Petco must stop filling its shelves with living things, making them suffer and die painfully,” says PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “PETA is on the streets and in the boardroom to tell the company that enough is enough.”

PETA investigations have uncovered rampant abuse in the pet trade, including at dealers who supply Petco pets. The Betta fish gasped for air on waterless trays on farms in Thailand before taking several days in international shipments to arrive at American Petco stores, where they are locked in tiny plastic cups. At Sun Pet Ltd. hundreds of guinea pigs, gerbils, mice, birds and other small animals were mistreated from Atlanta; in little dirty cages; and killed by violence, including gas poisoning and table blows.

PETA, whose motto is “Animals are not ours to experiment, eat, wear, use for fun or otherwise abuse” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority.
