Seattle – Tomorrow, University of Washington (UW) officials, President Ana Marie Cowes and Dean of the School of Pharmacy, Sean Sullivan, will wake up to a PETA mobile video bill that drives through their neighborhoods urging them to shut down the infamous Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC). The action is the latest step in PETA’s campaign to expose cruelty and abuse at a federally funded institution that is ripping baby monkeys away from their mothers and experimenting with them.
The footage includes footage of the WaNPRC monkeys in cupboard-sized cages that are their only home, as well as the devastating effects of long-term imprisonment and social isolation.
Also involved is John Gluck, Ph.D., a former primate experimenter who trained at controversial Harry Harlow’s laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and who now condemns such experiments.
“The UW Primate Lab stole the lives of thousands of monkeys and left babies with scars, but did not produce any significant advances in medicine, ”says PETA Senior Vice President Katy Guillermo. “The PETA billboard reflects growing opposition to the primate center’s nearly sixty years of terror and the urgent need to shut it down for good.”
The monkeys at WaNPRC died of suffocation, starvation, dehydration, veterinary error and asphyxiation with their own vomit. It was recently mentioned that this institution has repeatedly allowed monkeys to escape and get injured. He laid off several employees, including those who cared for the monkeys, and replaced eight directors in 10 years. With an apparent conflict of interest, the UW Animal Experiment Oversight Committee includes the director of an animal experimentation organization that receives significant contributions from UW.
Harvard University announced the closure of its New England National Primate Research Center in 2013 after critically addressing its many violations of animal welfare, the difficulty of providing monkeys in laboratories with even minimal humane treatment, and future research priorities – and PETA is urging UW to do the same.
According to a 2018 Pew Research Center poll, most Americans oppose any kind of animal experimentation. Research shows that 90% of basic research, most of which involves animals, does not lead to cures in humans.
