Suffern, NY – In honor of Ramapo Police Department and Officer Christopher Byrnes for freeing a raccoon whose head is stuck in a can, PETA is presenting officers with a special Police Department of Mercy award and a delicious vegan spread from Carmines Italian Deli Cafe on Monday. … Officers answered the landlord’s call about the panicked animal on Sunday, July 25, and after several attempts, Byrnes managed to get the jar out and the raccoon escaped into the woods unharmed.
When: August 2, Monday, 11.00
Where: Ramapo Police Department, 237 NY-59, Suffern
“Without the persistence of Officer Byrnes, this frightened raccoon could have died slowly and painfully,” says PETA vice president Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes this story will inspire others to lend a helping hand to animals in need.”
PETA offers tips on how to live in harmony with the wild and properly dispose of trash, including tightly sealing all trash in chew-proof containers, rinsing aluminum cans, and lowering the lids inward so they don’t cut the animal’s tongue by crushing the cans and putting them back on. caps for bottles and jars, and cutting up empty cardboard and plastic containers so that small animals cannot get stuck in them with their face or head.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse,” and which opposes arrogance, a worldview based on human superiority, will also have posters for officers to circulate reminding people of the need to correct disposal of cans. Photos will be available after the award has been presented. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
